Clumio Protect extends to Microsoft SQL Server


Clumio Inc. has extended the availability of Clumio Protect for Microsoft SQL Server on Amazon Elastic Compute Cluster (Amazon EC2), providing even deeper protection against ransomware attacks.

The Santa Clara, Calif., Based company, which provides enterprise data backup and recovery as a service, unveiled its Amazon web services-focused platform in October, which provides ransomware protection through air-gap solutions.

The new platform, slated for launch in December, also provides the lowest recovery time target for business continuity, simplifies compliance reporting, and optimizes Amazon S3 storage costs.

“Customers are moving to the cloud at a ridiculous rate,” Chadd Kenney, vice president of products for Clumio, told CRN. “And when you get there, there’s a whole bunch of new services them to play with.”

The two database architectures for SQL Server are Infrastructure as a Service and Platform as a Service offerings. Many are moving towards this, Kenney said, because infrastructure overhead can be reduced as they get closer to the infinite compute of the public cloud.

But it also creates a big data protection gap and many people are now looking for more cloud native architectures to support.

The infrastructure-as-a-service offering is a lot like an on-site elevator and shift model, he said. One of the big advantages is that customers can use their native tools that they used on premise as well as third-party tools that they used and bring their own licenses.

“The values ​​that this brings is that a user can get that DBA (Database Administrator) type experience without actually needing to be a DBA,” Kenney said. “They can recover databases at any point in time and can protect themselves from ransomware with our empty backups outside of AWS accounts.”

Clumio provides very low RPO (recovery point goal) and RTO (recovery time goal) with very fast recovery.

“We take 15-minute log backups to be able to get that granularity of recovery,” Kenney said. “We deliver this in an agentless deployment model with near zero impact that allows you this great SaaS simplicity without agents and reduces the vulnerability of security instances. “

It also lowers the overall cost of ownership.

“Before you had a copy running in your application, you had a copy and an appliance, another copy of another appliance, and then a hard drive,” he said. “You can really put operational recovery ransomware protection and long-term compliance in one service, which allows us to significantly reduce costs. “

All data is both at rest and encrypted, which can be encrypted by keys from Clumio or clients so they can have full control.

“We provide multi-factor authentication with integrations with single sign-on providers, provide access controls at the entity registration base, then we don’t have a delete button,” a- he declared.

Clumio Protect does not have a proprietary agent, so users do not have to upgrade or manage it. It does not use any CPU processing time in the host. All SQL Server aggregations are built-in, so there is no need to create them. You don’t have to script it either.

“We provide the ultimate flexibility by allowing any instance of AWS account to be recovered anytime up to the second,” said Kenney.

All of this syncs with the changing cloud trends that Kenney is currently seeing in the market.

“Businesses are really starting to go through the digital transformation where they are sending critical databases to the public cloud for what we see in SQL and we are trying to support that,” he said. “But we are also seeing the next evolution of transforming these applications into cloud native services. Then even more, we start to see some of the compute assets being reconfigured and then using S3 as the primary persistent storage device.

He is also seeing more and more analytical environments develop.

“People are looking to consolidate the datasets inside S3 and run analysis on top of it in various forms or modes,” he said. “People are starting to realize that the criticality of S3 is getting higher and higher and we’ve become more focused on helping them protect that and categorizing their data to make sure they’re protecting the right things. “
